1. Preparation: First, clean the seal counter surface on the shaft and smooth out any burrs or rough patches.
2. Measurement: Measure the diameter of an unworn section of the shaft in three positions, then take the average. This will confirm if the shaft is within the recommended specifications for the sleeve size. A mean diameter within this range implies a secure press fit for the sleeve, negating the need for adhesive.
3. Positioning: Identify the exact area to place the sleeve to cover the seal wear track. Mark the shaft accurately, ensuring the sleeve covers the worn section rather than just being flush with the shaft’s end.
4. Filling Shallow Grooves (Optional): Shallow wear grooves typically don’t need filling. However, a light layer of non-hardening sealant, like Loctite 209, can be applied inside the sleeve. Ensure any excess sealant that migrates outside is cleaned.
5. Filling Deep Grooves: For deeply scored shafts, fill in the groove with a powdered metal epoxy before installing the sleeve. Install the sleeve promptly to remove excess filler. Clean any residual filler from the sleeve's outside surface afterward.
