The SKF SPEEDI-SLEEVE is a fast and effective way to refinish worn shafts. It's quicker than remetalizing or regrinding, and provides an improved sealing system. The outside surface of an SKF SPEEDI-SLEEVE forms an ideal sealing surface, unlike many popular regrinding and refinishing techniques that produce a surface that cannot be properly sealed.
To install an SKF SPEEDI-SLEEVE, follow these steps:
- Clean the seal counter surface on the shaft and file down any burrs or rough spots.
- Measure the diameter where the sleeve will be positioned on an unworn portion of the shaft and ensure the mean diameter is within the recommended specifications for the sleeve size.
- Determine the exact position where the sleeve must be placed to cover the seal wear track.
- For shallow wear grooves, you can optionally apply a light layer of a non-hardening sealant to the inside diameter surface of the sleeve.
- If the shaft is deeply scored, fill the groove with a powdered metal epoxy-type filler before installing the sleeve.
- Insert the flange end of the sleeve onto the shaft first, then place the installation tool over the sleeve.
- Gently tap the center of the installation tool until the sleeve covers the seal worn surface.
- If needed, remove the flange by cutting it perpendicular to the tear-off groove and bending it back and forth or twisting it into a coil.
- Check for any remaining burrs and remove them.
- Lubricate the sleeve with the system medium before installing the seal.
- Proceed with the seal installation.
The standard range of SKF SPEEDI-SLEEVE sizes covers shaft diameters from 0.472" to 8" (12 mm to 200 mm). These thin-walled, 0.011" (0.28 mm) stainless steel sleeves are wear-resistant and provide a finish of Ra 10 to 20 μin (0.25 to 0.5 μm), making them an ideal sealing surface. The installation is quick and easy, reducing downtime, and each SPEEDI-SLEEVE comes with a disposable installation tool.
