Product Installation: Understanding the Speedi-Sleeve
Installing an SKF SPEEDI-SLEEVE is straightforward if you follow these steps:
- Start by cleaning the seal counter surface on the shaft, filing down any burrs or rough areas.
- Measure the diameter at the position where the sleeve will be placed, ideally on a non-worn section of the shaft. Take measurements at three different points and average them to confirm the shaft's size is within the recommended specifications. If the average diameter falls within the range designated for your sleeve size, the sleeve will securely fit without adhesive.
- Identify the location where the sleeve must cover the seal wear track, measuring accurately or marking it directly. The sleeve should fully cover the worn area rather than merely sit flush with the end of the shaft.
- If dealing with shallow wear grooves, filling them is unnecessary. For a stronger seal, you may apply a thin layer of a non-hardening sealant, such as Loctite 209, on the inside diameter of the sleeve, avoiding any migration of sealant onto the outside surface.
- For deep grooves, use a powdered metal epoxy type filler to fill the groove before installing the sleeve. The sleeve will clean off any excess filler during installation.
- Position the flange end of the sleeve first onto the shaft, and then fit the installation tool over the sleeve.
- Lightly tap the center of the installation tool until the sleeve adequately covers the worn area. If the tool is too short, a length of pipe or tubing with a smooth end can serve as an extension, but be careful not to scratch the sleeve’s precision ground surface.
- Maintain the flange intact unless necessary to remove it. If removal is warranted, cut the flange straight along the tear-off groove with metal shears, ensuring not to damage the sleeve surface.
- Once the sleeve is installed, examine it for any burrs that could impair the seal.
- Prior to installation, lubricate the sleeve with the system medium for optimal performance.
- Finally, proceed with the seal installation.
Determining the Right Sleeve Size
It is essential to accurately clean the shaft before measuring to determine the correct sleeve size. Measure the diameter of an undamaged section of the shaft at least three times and calculate the average. If this average falls within the permissible range in the product specifications, the SKF Speedi-Sleeve will fit appropriately.
The SKF SPEEDI-SLEEVE provides a fast and efficient solution for worn shafts, making it quicker than alternatives like remetalizing or regrinding, while enhancing the sealing system. These thin-walled stainless steel sleeves, ranging from .472” to 8” (12 mm to 200 mm) in diameter and 0.011” (0.28 mm) thick, create a sealing surface that is even harder than the original shaft surface.
Affordable and easy to install, each SPEEDI-SLEEVE comes with a disposable installation tool, ensuring that you can quickly and effectively restore your crankshaft's sealing surface while minimizing downtime. Each installation must be executed with care, leveraging the provided installation tool to guarantee successful results.
