The SKF SPEEDI-SLEEVE is a fast and effective solution for refinishing worn shafts. It's quicker than remetalizing or regrinding, and provides an improved sealing surface compared to many popular refinishing techniques.
To determine the appropriate sleeve size, it is first necessary to carefully clean the shaft. The diameter of an undamaged section of the seal counterface should then be measured on at least three different planes. The arithmetical mean of these measurements determines the size of the SKF SPEEDI-SLEEVE. If the value lies within the permissible range listed in the product table for the shaft diameter, the SPEEDI-SLEEVE will have an adequate tight fit on the shaft and will not require an adhesive.
The standard range of SKF SPEEDI-SLEEVE sizes covers shaft diameters from 0.472" to 8" (12 mm to 200 mm). The sleeves are thin-walled, at 0.011" (0.28 mm), and made of high-quality stainless steel. The contact surface is wear-resistant with a finish of Ra 10 to 20 μin (0.25 to 0.5 μm). No expensive machining or preparation is required before mounting, reducing downtime as installation only takes a few minutes.
Here's a step-by-step guide on how to install an SKF SPEEDI-SLEEVE:
- Clean the seal counter surface on the shaft, and file down any burrs or rough spots.
- Measure the diameter where the sleeve will be positioned on an unworn portion of the shaft, taking three measurements and averaging the readings to ensure the shaft is within specifications.
- Determine the exact position where the sleeve must be placed to cover the seal wear track.
- For shallow wear grooves, a light layer of a non-hardening sealant can be applied to the inside diameter of the sleeve. For deep grooves, a powdered metal epoxy filler should be used.
- Install the sleeve, with the flange end going on the shaft first, and use the provided installation tool to gently tap it into place.
- If necessary, remove the flange by cutting it perpendicular to the tear-off groove with a metal shear.
- After installation, check for any burrs that could damage the seal, and lubricate the sleeve with the system medium before proceeding with the seal installation.
The SKF SPEEDI-SLEEVE is a cost-effective and easy-to-install solution for restoring worn shafts, providing a durable sealing surface and minimizing downtime.
