Product Description: How the Speedi-Sleeve Works

Installing an SKF SPEEDI-SLEEVE involves several key steps:

  1. Preparation: Begin by cleaning the seal counter surface on the shaft. Ensure you file down any burrs or rough spots for a smooth finish.

  2. Measurement: Measure the diameter on an unworn section of the shaft at three different positions. Calculate the average measurement. If this average falls within the recommended specifications for a given sleeve size, there’s an adequate press fit to prevent sliding or spinning without adhesive.

  3. Positioning: Identify the precise location for the sleeve placement to cover the seal wear track, marking the exact point if necessary. It’s essential that the sleeve is over the worn area, rather than simply flush with the shaft end.

  4. Wear Grooves: For shallow wear grooves, filling is not necessary. Optionally, you can apply a non-hardening sealant like Loctite 209 to the inner diameter surface of the sleeve. Ensure to clean any sealant that migrates outside.

  5. Deep Scoring: For heavily scored shafts, fill the groove with a powdered metal epoxy filler. Position the sleeve before the filler hardens, ensuring it wipes off any excess.

  6. Installation: The flange end of the sleeve should go on the shaft first, followed by the installation tool placed over the sleeve.

  7. Tapping: Gently tap the center of the tool until the sleeve covers the worn seal surface. If the installation tool is too short, you can use a pipe or tubing, ensuring the diameter matches the tool.

  8. Flange Care: Keep the flange intact unless clearance adjustments are needed. If removal is necessary, use metal shears to cut it precisely along the tear-off groove.

  9. Final Check: After installation, inspect for burrs that could damage the seal.

  10. Lubrication: Prior to installing the sleeve, lubricate it with the system medium.

  11. Seal Installation: Finally, proceed with the installation of the seal.

To ascertain which sleeve size is appropriate, clean the shaft meticulously and measure the diameter of a non-damaged area. Minimum three measurements give an average, determining the suitable SKF Speedi-Sleeve size to ensure a proper fit.

The SKF SPEEDI-SLEEVE is a fast, effective solution for worn shafts, often faster than traditional regrinding methods. Available in sizes from .472” to 8” (12 mm to 200 mm), these thin-walled (0.011” or 0.28 mm) stainless steel sleeves offer a wear-resistant surface. Installation is quick and simple, minimizing downtime while requiring no complex preparations. Each Speedi-Sleeve comes with a disposable installation tool to facilitate effortless application.
